10 Ways to Improve Your Morning

Well, it’s probably something of a drastic understatement to say that I’ve never been a morning person. Don’t be the person that wakes me up at 5 a.m. and then tells me the house is NOT on fire. If I’m not still up than it’s way too early to be getting up.

Most times in my life I’ve been a severe insomniac. Missing way to much sleep and paying the price. Going to bed super late, staying up most of the night, then getting out of bed groggy late in the morning.

Over the years I’ve actually learned to manage the insomnia for the most part. And God has blessed me with better sleep during most seasons of life these days. It’s a rarity for me to revert back to my old tendencies.

The main battle now is….

How do I become a “morning person”

I can say that’s just “not me” all I want but that doesn’t really make it acceptable.

The Bible says
‘She rises while it is yet night and giveth meat to her family..’ – Proverbs 31:15a
‘And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.’ Mark 1:35
‘My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.’ Psalm 119:148
There are others I was thinking of but didn’t list, too.

Not to mention there’s no denying that it’s more productive. Or at least easier on my body than making up that lost time for productivity at night, which comes more natural to me. I love to start a good project at 12a.m.

But I sense a natural change accuring within my body’s clock that tells me to go to bed earlier and then wakes me up earlier.

I despise alarm clocks…. but I bought one. I put it in the bathroom though so that I didn’t have to listen to it tick. I didn’t buy a digital because It makes my insomnia worse to lay there staring at what time it is knowing I should be asleep. This one is aqua. That’s bound to make it more likable… right?

So… I’m following my body’s physical suggesting and my heart’s conviction that I should rise early as the virtuous woman does.

But how???? Some of us don’t wake up… don’t wake up ready to spring… don’t wake up happy. I’m a happy person… I am… but at 6am? Nahhhh

I read a lot of articles. I tried different things. I thought about the better mornings I’d had. These are the tips I came up with. They will be later followed by another list on preparing the night before to have a good day. Also A list on how to improve your sleep.

1.) Wake up just a little earlier than usual. Set your clock back gradually until you find the ideal time.
2.) Breathe deeply before you stand up, taking in and appreciating your surroundings (clean, soft, white sheets & pillows, light coming in the window, framed photos of family) Use this time to mentally face up to the day. Tell yourself ‘This is going to be a lovely day’ And if you just know it’s actually going to be a quite stressful day then tell yourself ‘I can handle this. I will stay calm and collected. The Lord is my Strength.’
3.)Pray. Pray God will grant you a good attitude. Pray he’ll help you to use kind words at the breakfast table. Pray about the obstacles of your day. About being a witness if you’re leaving. For your family and friends.
4.)Select your clothing carefully. Choose clothes you can put on and then forget about. You shouldn’t have to think about your clothes after you have them on. Choose an outfit well suited to the events of the day. That may include bringing some layering pieces a long.
5.) Wash your face with cold water. Or roll an ice cube over it especially if your eyes look tired.
6.) Eat a nourishing breakfast. THIS IS A MUST!!!! For so many reasons. Health wise, productivity wise, attitude wise, family relationship wise, and weight wise. If you don’t like it at first… don’t give up. It’s a learned habit that’s hard to get used to but eventually you crave breakfast.
7.) Use Kind, Positive words.
9.) Take a moment to read or enjoy a positive mentally stimulating activity. (writing to a friend, collecting some good ideas for your day from Pinterest, journaling)
10.) Prepare! Get things ready the night before. Make lists so you don’t forget things. (I’ll write another list that details how to spend 15-30 minutes the night before preparing to have a great day)
